Study Finds Artistic Tendencies Linked to 'Schizophrenia Gene'

Kathryn Patricelli, MA

We came across an interesting story on the NewScientist publication that we wanted to share with you.

splashes of colorA research study recently found that a genetic mutation around a gene (neuregulin 1), which is involved in brain development and is linked to psychosis and schizophrenia, also influences creativity.   The study found that a "single letter mutation that affects how much of the neuregulin 1 protein is made in the brain has been linked to psychosis, poor memory and sensitivity to criticism."

The researcher speculates that "that the mutation dampens a brain region that reins in mood and behaviour, called the prefrontal cortex. This change could unleash creative potential in some people and psychotic delusions in others."
